  • 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 pound fully cooked turkey ham, diced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange half the potatoes in the dish. Sprinkle half the ham over the potatoes.
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk and broth until thickened. Remove from heat.
  5. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg into the sauce.
  6. Pour half the sauce over the potatoes and ham.
  7. Top with remaining potatoes and ham. Pour remaining sauce over the top.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with foil.
  9. Bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil. Sprinkle cheese over the top.
  11. Bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
  12. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
