Method
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange half the potatoes in the dish. Sprinkle half the ham over the potatoes.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk and broth until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg into the sauce.
- Pour half the sauce over the potatoes and ham.
- Top with remaining potatoes and ham. Pour remaining sauce over the top.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil. Sprinkle cheese over the top.
- Bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
