Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • red food coloring food coloring (gel preferred)
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies optional, for garnish

Method
 

  1. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).
  2. Mix in egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract.
  3. Whisk flour and salt, then combine with wet ingredients to form dough.
  4. Divide dough, tint one half red, chill both for 30 minutes.
  5. Roll into ropes, twist, shape into candy canes, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes.
  6. Cool slightly, then garnish with crushed peppermint if desired.

Notes

Chill the dough well for easier shaping and twisting.
