Method
- Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).
- Mix in egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract.
- Whisk flour and salt, then combine with wet ingredients to form dough.
- Divide dough, tint one half red, chill both for 30 minutes.
- Roll into ropes, twist, shape into candy canes, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes.
- Cool slightly, then garnish with crushed peppermint if desired.
