Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
- Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
- Layer half of the potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the onion slices.
- Pour half of the milk sauce over the potatoes and onions. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and sauce.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle with cheddar cheese (if using). Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add other vegetables like sliced ham or mushrooms.
