Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
  4. Layer half of the potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the onion slices.
  5. Pour half of the milk sauce over the potatoes and onions. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and sauce.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  7. Remove the foil and sprinkle with cheddar cheese (if using). Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add other vegetables like sliced ham or mushrooms.
