  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Toss potatoes and onion in a bowl.
  3. Whisk butter and flour in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thickened.
  4. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
  5. Layer half of the potato and onion mixture in a greased baking dish.
  6. Pour half of the milk mixture over the potatoes and onions.
  7. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and milk mixture.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  9. Bake for 1 hour.
  10. Remove foil and bake for 30-45 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
  11. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add a clove of minced garlic to the milk mixture for extra flavor.
