Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour, then gradually whisk in milk until smooth and thickened.
- Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
- Layer half of the potatoes, ham, and onion in the baking dish. Pour half of the milk mixture over the layers.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, onion, and milk mixture.
- Cover and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove foil and sprinkle with cheddar cheese (if using).
- Bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add other vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms.
