  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 lb cooked turkey ham, diced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg (optional) optional
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional) optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour, then gradually whisk in milk until smooth and thickened.
  3. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
  4. Layer half of the potatoes, ham, and onion in the baking dish. Pour half of the milk mixture over the layers.
  5. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, onion, and milk mixture.
  6. Cover and bake for 1 hour.
  7. Remove foil and sprinkle with cheddar cheese (if using).
  8. Bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted.
  9. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add other vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms.
